mistakes and helps us to build on successes. Here in the US we have laws with the intent to protect historic places and buildings. Americans cherish our historic buildings, and we take pride in protecting antique structures to preserve a little of our past.
The Fort Lewis Museum does double-duty: here is a building whose purpose is to preserve the past by storing and displaying artifacts from the history of Fort Lewis, and the structure itself is on the National Register of Historic Places. WJA-dc led a caring restoration effort, bringing the old wood building up to date in terms of earthquake resistance and life safety codes. The building envelope was restored with new windows and a new roof.

To provide access for wheelchair bound, an elevator was concealed in a building courtyard so as not to impact the look of the exterior. Originally the building was built as an inn, and three of the original inn rooms were restored to their original state, enabling the building itself to be among the museum exhibits. Many of our treasured buildings need loving care. Once care is given, it’s amazing how adaptable and resilient historic structures are, ready to offer many more years of service while reminding us of our past.
