It is a challenge for apartment complexes to offer a sense of individuality to residents, but it is possible through presenting a strong image from the outside. Residents can find a sense of pride in place when care is taken in achieving harmony between the building image and the surrounding grounds in terms of both aesthetics and function. This harmony results from a comprehensive design approach at all scales, from how a site interacts with the surrounding environment to finessing window sunshades and wood trim in the lobbies.
The site offers attractive amenities including basketball courts, workout areas, picnic pavilions, and covered parking for bicycles and motorcycles. These amenities are carefully placed among thoughtful landscaping and accessory buildings that pick up architectural motifs from the main buildings. All the while, the apartment complex grounds connect functionally to the surrounding campus with sidewalks, drives for accessing parking and fire truck lanes for emergencies.
The outdoor areas are the most public in the project, the starting point in a sequence of spaces that are a spectrum of privacy levels, from the outdoor public space, through the semi-public lobby, through the semi-private corridors, and finally into the privacy of each apartment.
The apartment buildings rely on symmetry, shadow lines, window patterns, and architectural ornament to conjure a sense of individuality while recalling architectural motifs from the surrounding campus. Wood, metal and stucco form the palette of materials, offering different degrees of texture and warmth to both enhance pride in place and help communicate the spectrum of privacy. The results are apartments that allow residents to maintain a sense of individuality while sharing a home with many.
