The Minnitti Field Masterplan for Tacoma Community College identifies options for the replacement of existing baseball support facilities in addition exploring to potential siting, and facility access. The proposed replacement options developed are intended to support activities at Minnitti field for the college baseball team, athletics staff, visiting spectators, and the greater college and neighborhood community.
Site: Minnitti Field sits on a slight plateau above the existing parking area which complicates access and has limited buildable area at field level. As a result of this constraint two siting options were identified for development.
Preferred Option: Splits the program into two discrete structures; the Fieldhouse, and the Batting Facility and locates all facilities at the field level. Due to the grade change an existing pathway from the parking level would be modified for ADA compliant access. The fieldhouse would be sited at the edge of the plateau, to the south of the grandstand and would create a modest field level courtyard and gathering space for spectators. The fieldhouse would be split between team facilities (including locker rooms, showers, and coach’s office) and visitor facilities such as accessible restrooms and concessions.
The Batting Facility would be located to the east of the baseball field, at the southern end of the adjacent soccer practice field. This building is proposed to be a pre-engineered metal building for cost savings and efficiency.
Secondary Option: In this option, similar programmatic components and construction types/materials would be used, but in a combined, single building located west of the existing parking area on the lower portion of the site. The building will have three distinct forms, each with pitched shed roofs. The team area (locker room and coach’s office) would be on one end, the visitor’s restrooms and field storage on the other, and the batting cage enclosure with a higher roof would be set back from and overlap each of the two ends as a central unifying element. The angled orientation of the building on the site provides a ‘front’ face towards both the parking area and the main stair/walkway from the field. The level area in front of the building will contain paved walkways and landscaped areas (open lawn with shade trees) as a forecourt to the building.
