The maintenance complex provides interior and exterior spaces for the storage and repair of military vehicles and equipment. The program includes: a 12,500 SF TEMF; an 8,400 SF organizational storage building; a 480 SF petroleum, oil, and lubricants storage building; a 480 SF hazardous materials storage building; a 155,750 SF organizational vehicle parking area; a 16,200 SF POV parking area; a 48,000 SF shop apron; and a 33,200 SF stormwater management area. The building is subdivided into a core area and a repair area. The core area contains administration rooms, a break room, a bench room for the repair of small equipment, locker rooms, vaults and other storage spaces. The repair area features six repair bays and a 10-ton overhead bridge crane.
During start of design, WJA facilitated a two-day design charrette which led the design team to produce three site layout alternatives that explored different options for the location and orientation of the maintenance building, locations of vehicular and pedestrian gates, relationships between programmatic elements, etc. This generated a lively discussion amongst all project stakeholders of the advantages and disadvantages of each alternative and inspiring new ideas. On the second day of the charrette, WJA presented two additional site layout alternatives that incorporated the ideas from the first day. This iterative design process that explored several different alternatives allowed the overall project team to confidently identify the preferred site layout and move forward with design.
